TAOP: Assignment 3 – Colour: Colour Harmony – Complimentary – Four – Candle Flame

This is my 14th shot for assignment three – “colour” and is the fourth and final shot for colour harmony through complimentary colours.

Candle Flame

ISO200, 1/1000s, f/1.8

Shot on manual with the flash bounced off the ceiling.  Fast exposure to free the flame with a reasonably sharp-looking edge.  Sharpened and saturation of yellow boosted in Lightroom.

I picked the candle up in a Chinese supermarket in Manchester’s China Town.

Balance and Movement

Balance and Movement

The yellow of the flame stands out strongly in this image as it is bright – almost white – against the violet background, yet there’s still less than the harmonic proportion of 1 part yellow to 3 parts violet.

Movement-wise, it’s a fairly static image due to the vertical arrangement of the frame and subject – the flame only hints at gentle movement at it’s tip due to the gentle curve.

Shot Setup

This was the setup for the shot.

Candle Flame Setup

I originally mounted the flash to camera-right, but I couldn’t get the exposure time less than 1/200s without attaching the flash directly to the camera.
