My third set of images are for the shade and background sun scene – this required me to take images of people in shade while the background is in sunshine.  I took all of these around Piccadilly Gardens as it’s a busy area so a reasonable opportunity to get the shots.

Typical of all these images, I’ve minimised the sky visible in the frame so as to avoid there being a massive amount of contrast in the images.  I set the camera up to balance exposure time and ISO to try and get a “middle ground” given the range in the image.

The histogram shows a spread of tones, with a big peak toward the dark tones for the foreground.

Difference between how I saw this scene, and how it turned out:

As far as how I saw this, it was very different to how the camera captured it – the eye quickly adapts to the contrast; however I expected the camera to have trouble with the wide contrast.

I prefer this image to the first – a lot more detail is clear and the figure is framed in the shade of the building.  Unfortunately I didn’t spot the head of the person on the right intruding into the image until later.  The settings were the same a for the first image.

The histogram demonstrates there is less of a range of tones in this image, but there’s still a peak toward the dark tones on the left.

Again, as with the first image, I expected the camera to struggle with this, but having less contrast between the main subject and what was behind them made for a better image.

A bit more sky and the building on the left is catching the sun so there is some clipping of the bright tones, and in some of the dark areas, due to the higher contrast in this scene.  Key details isn’t lost, but normally I would do some post processing work to brighten the darker areas.  In the brightest areas I don’t feel it matters that much, as they are mainly on the fringes of the image.  The histogram below demonstrates the clipping with the high peaks at both ends of the scale:

Difference between how I saw this scene, and how it turned out:

I didn’t expect the building on the left to catch so much of the sun and for the camera to struggle so much with it.  Otherwise it is what I expected.
